Regina – Oasis In The Canadian Prairies

Regina – man-made Oasis Actually has a close-by Desert

Regina stands out like an oasis in the middle of the Canadian prairie desert. The major city of the province of Saskatchewan has 180,000 of the province’s 968,000 residents. The other major towns on the Canadian prairies include Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Lloydminster have their attractions, but Regina appears unusually forested and green for a prairie town.

If you have never been to the prairies of the Great Northwest, it can be depicted as flat, very flat. Giant sky country is a term frequently coined for the prairies since you can see from horizon to horizon. The tallest things that might block your view are the few grain lifts that store the region’s major rural product – grain. You might wonder why settlers would come to this area of North America. In the last two centuries numerous states offered land and other inducements to draw folk from Ontario. Hungry for land they came to places like Saskatoon and Regina. Though population expansion is not as high as in oil rich Calgary and Edmonton, it is a widely held belief that the standard of life is higher in Saskatchewan. Many new residents are coming from Alberta.

Oil in Saskatchewan?

Saskatchewan has usually been known for grain farming and potash production. What’s not famous is that Saskatchewan is second only to Alberta in oil production. Crude oil extraction occurs in the western and southern parts of the province and the economy is doing very well today. If smaller communities without the big old city issues is interesting to you, you may need to visit Regina and see if this could be a sensible choice for your next home. It is also a good vacation spot in the summer.

Early settlers to the area were forward thinking and set about planting lots of trees. Today there’s an approximate 300,000 trees within the town. Regina contains more than one hundred town parks including the Wascana Centre, a 2300 acre park where you’ll find Regina’s top attractions, including the Legislative Building, Conexux arts Centre, MacKenzie Art gallery, Royal Saskatchewan Museum, and Saskatchewan Science Centre. Wascana Lake is the biggest man made lake in Canada is a bird and wildlife sanctuary.

Downtown Regina

Downtown Regina is a 24-block area offering more that 700 retail shops, hostels, services, restaurants and other attractions. Victoria Square Mall offers lots of shopping and you’ll find Casino Regina an enjoyable night out. The town offers each cultural, sporting, and recreational opportunity you would expect in an important town yet without the big city Problems of congestion, crime, and rude behaviour. You can arrive here through the TransCanada highway or the Regina global airfield and you will find hotels close to the airport or downtown.

Rodeo, professional football, golfing, and walking and biking trails will supply masses of entertainment and leisure. There are 45 golf courses in the Regina area. Catch a coarse Riders soccer game if you’re in the town. The Canadian game is amusing to watch and Regina fans love their soccer team. They are perhaps the most eager fans of the Canadian football League.

Side trips from Regina include the Great Sand Hills near Saskatoon, which is a desert area of 750 square miles near the South Saskatchewan brook. It is an area of sand dunes that looks like any desert you might see in the US southwest or in the Middle East. Blackstrap mountain is another fascinating man made recreational area which offers downhill skiing in winter and trail biking in the summertime.

Canada’s prairie cities are growing in big leaps, and Regina could be the town of choice for living and a relaxing vacation.

Lawn Tips for Easier Maintenance and Greener Grass

96617266 0829357056 m Lawn Tips for Easier Maintenance and Greener Grass photo by j. botter.

I grew up in the suburbs — where people take pride in their lawns. Such pride, that I once witnessed a fist-fight between neighbors that started over a lawn related issue (or maybe it was just an ego issue).

My parents loved their lawn. When I think about it, I imagine that they just loved grass. My parents watched golf on television only to comment and critic on the condition of the course’s greens. I’m serious — and I’m not over-stating when I claim my family had the nicest yard and lawn in our sub-division.

The thing that sticks out in my head about my parent’s lawn care is how much simpler than it was in comparison to our neighbors. Many folks had expensive automatic sprinkler systems. My parents watered the yard with a $10 sprinkler or simply with the hose. The fact is, that simple is often better when it comes to lawn care. Check out my easy to follow tips which will keep your lawn happy and green:

Don’t Over-Water / Use a Rain Gauge – Over-watering is one of the most common lawn problems. Too much water causes much more damage than under-watering does — this is because most varieties of turf handle short droughts fine, but can be wrecked with flooding. Brown patches (commonly a fungal infection) on the lawn can often be attributed over-watering.

Most grass requires about 1 – 1.5 inches of water per week to optimally provide moisture for healthy lawns. Use a rain gauge (available at gardening centers) to keep tabs on how much rain your lawn is getting and supplement weekly with your sprinkler.

Mowing Tips

The height at which you cut your lawn is important. In the summer a 3-4 inch height is best, and in the spring/fall opt for a 2- 3 inch height. The last mow of the season should be around 1.5 inches.

The condition of your lawn mower is also very important. A dull blade rips grass and leaves it more vulnerable to pests and disease. You can check to see if your mowers blade needs sharpening by observing grass it has cut. If the grass appears torn or ripped, then it is time to get your blade sharpened. Most consumer lawn-mowers should get their blades sharpened twice a year.

Change the mowing direction of the cut each time to keep coarse grasses under control and ensure an even surface.

Additionally, leaving the clippings on your lawn after a mow. The clipping decompose and provide excellent and needed nutrients to the soil. By doing this you do not need to use as much fertilizer on your lawn.

Fertilizing

Over-feeding is another common problem for lawns. Your lawn most likely requires only 4 feedings a year: Spring, Summer, Early Fall, and after First Frost. The fall feeding is vital — but if you are in drought conditions you may want to skip the summer feeding.

Read the label completely and follow the directions exactly when using store-bought fertilizer. You’ll get the best results by following the label — remember more is not better.

Use half of the fertilizer in one direction of your lawn (like right-left) and the other half in the other direction (up-down), to avoid streaking and spots.

Other Maintenance

Aerate lawns once a year, optimally in the fall with soil temperature around 60F. This will help prevent thatch and increase the amount of nutrients getting to the soil. High-traffic areas become compacted over time and aeration is especially important for these spots.

There you have my basic tips to keep a healthy enough lawn to make you want to defend it with your fists. Congrats.

A visit to Vegas does not need to leave you bankrupted. Amazingly , there are a wide selection of things to do and see which will not empty your wallet. Whilst you may want to do some betting, that doesn’t need to be the all incorporating purpose of a sojourn in Vegas. Las Vegas party suites are a perfect way to have fun in vegas inexpensively.

There are other way also to have a good time cheaply. Lets just take one example. The superb fountains outside the Bellagio go off each 15 mins and are free. Do you know that they dance in time with the music? The best time to visit them is at night. If you can control your inner spender, the Forum Shops have lots to do and see at no cost too. The mall is great, and the chatting statues can be quite entertaining. It’s also an excellent place to eat or get souvenirs for your trip. The Cheesecake Factory, Spago, and Bertollinis all offer glorious meals at reasonable costs, regularly with portions sufficiently big to share. Sadly , the price of shopping could be coarse on your pocket book, so attempt to restrict yourself to just browsing whenever it’s possible if you are attempting to stick to a budget. If you have come to Vegas for the betting, consider Slots of Fun Vegas. The betting, food, and drinks are less expensive here than at some of the other casinos. Restrict yourself to the lower limit tables and you could be in a position to walk away without leaving behind half your life’s savings.

If you are in downtown Vegas at night, be certain to see the Freemont Street Experience. It is a free light show that comes to life each half hour. Downtown also has lower room rates and lower limit tables than some of the bigger hostels up on the Strip. Another great free show is the Masquerade in the Sky at the Rio. The show goes on nightly, and if you sit close to the smorgasboard you may watch the entertaining escapades of the aptitude barkeepers at the same time. If you like a more relaxed, natural atmosphere, take a break in the Gardens at the Bellagio. The gardens are handsome and give you a pleasant, quiet break from the fast-paced workings of the casinos and betting. At the same time, talking of fountains, ramble a little thru the ground floor, and you can enjoy seeing the planet’s tallest chocolate fountain in a rainbow of colours.

Another nice mall to stroll thru is the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian Hotel. You can browse the shops, watch the gondolas go buy, or sit and just enjoy the music and the folk. The Postrio and the Canonita both offer menu items for dining that may not completely cost a bomb too. If you have youngsters, there are cheap things for them to do too. The Lied Discovery Museum has a childrens museum that inspires kids to touch, seek, and explore. Found only a couple of blocks from central, it offers an opportunity for families to do stuff together at a comparatively low cost.

Another comparatively cheap thing to do with the youngsters is to spend an afternoon at Circus Circus in the Adventurdome. There are a number of thrill rides within the indoor theme park the children are certain to enjoy, as well as colonnade games, small golfing, and a rollercoaster.

If you can keep the children from desiring to buy everything in sight, another free destination can be the FAO Schwarz store within the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. Besides toys galore, the speaking statues and giant fish tank are bound to be a triumph. There are motion machine rides available for a cost effective too.

Always bear in mind that the first purpose of Vegas hotels and casinos is to excite you to spend money. The bling, the lights, the complete atmosphere — are all figured out to prompt you to use the slots or belly up to the betting tables. Keep away from the main betting halls as much as you’re able and you are pocketbook will certainly benefit.

Understanding the Different Kinds of Grasses for Your Landscape

270074061 66f7cf6727 m Understanding the Different Kinds of Grasses for Your Landscape photo by mwlguide.

When the subject of gardens and landscaping is brought to a conversation, the first things that pop into people’s minds are trees, shrubs, flowers. Rarely do people take notice of something very significant and crucial for the beauty of most landscapes – grasses. Humans step on them, children play on them, dogs roll over them, but most of the time people ignore these prominent figures of gardens and parks. Imagine how a landscape would be without grasses – it would be dull, dry, boring if not downright ugly. Without grasses, a scenery would usually not be complete.

Grasses are very useful not only for their aesthetic qualities but for some practical purposes as well. Grasses are very flexible as they can grow in almost any quality of soil more than other kinds of plants. Grasses do not need so much for them to thrive, just water is enough for most grasses to grow and make any landscape green. While many people have the notion that grasses are boring, their wide variety makes them interesting components of a landscape as they come in different colors, textures, and heights. Even when grasses die and get dry, they still have certain decorative and practical value. Grasses are very important for the environment as well as they serve as ground covering that can prevent soil erosion and maintain a good amount of water for other plants to grow.

There are many kinds of grasses each having their distinct qualities that make them worth planting in different kinds of landscapes. Here are some of them:

Bermuda grass – this is perhaps the most popular kind of grass which is extremely popular in places where the sun shines most of the time. This kind of grass is ideal for sunny areas because they are very resistant to heat and drought. This high tolerance makes it an ideal grass to cover vast tracts of lands. However, the hardiness of Bermuda also gives it the tendency to “invade” areas inhabited by other plants.

Blue grass – this is another popular type of grass that grows well during the summer being drought tolerant like the Bermuda. This is very common in the north because of its tolerance cold weather. However, blue grass can grow clumpy when not maintained well.

Bahia grass – this is very popular in the Southeastern parts as they are very easy to maintain. Bahia grass has coarse blades that are resistant to drought and shade as well as salty water and soils. However, this grass requires a lot of mowing because of its texture.

Buffalo grass – this one is very much like the blue grace and is also rather common in the Northern parts. This grass is good for parts that there is little rainfall. The appearance is somewhat a cross between the blue and Bermuda grasses. Its blue-green tinge in summer turns straw brown during winter.

Kentucky bluegrass – this is the most popular kind of grass in the north, and it is sometimes planed in the south. It is characterized to have a soft texture and a dark green shade, it is quite resilient to cold.
Bent grass – this is a perennial type of grass with a fine texture. It is known to form soft turfs that are tightly knit. This characteristic makes it an ideal grass for golf course greens.

There are many other types of grass, each grow for appropriate purposes for appropriate regions and weather conditions. There are several books and magazines for landscaping that tackle everything about grasses. There are also many online resources about the subject.

Grasses are important parts of any landscape. They add life to any dull piece of land as they provide a sense of warmth and coziness.
