Cleveland golf has been around a good 20 years now. While they have recently been under new management and have just been bought out by Srixon Golf, they continue to make some of the best golf equipment in the world. Known for their wedges first, Cleveland has begun a transformation into a company that brings out great products throughout the bag.
Consider these game improvement golf clubs for the mid handicapper. The market is filled with “super game improvement irons” and these definitely aren’t in that category. We’re starting to see more and more customers that want forgiveness with a somewhat traditional look a tricky combination for companies to achieve. The Cleveland CG Gold irons are an admirable entry into this category.
The irons also feature more offset and a larger head head than the CG Red’s, two very important features that the mid to high handicap desire in an iron. The soles are also wider to prevent digging and weight is more concentrated around the perimeter of the club head to produce a more forgiving club head. Cleveland has also begun to mark the lie angles on the heads with a series of color-coded markings on the hosel to determine if these golf clubs are flat, upright or standard.
We feel the Cleveland CG Gold irons fall somewhere in the middle on this one. Put it this way a poor ball striker would benefit more from the company’s HiBore irons and a really good ball striker would be better off with the Cleveland CG Red irons. The added mass from the Micro-Cavity technology is placed in a position where it can help with forgiveness and keep the club more stable on miss hits.
